PGI at the time said that they saw a 900% increase in Tibmerwolves and vowed never to put them on sale, going so far as to say and i quote "next time well put the price of Tibmerwolves up and see if you buy them"

Because you arent looking at the TAX involved with buying an IS mech vs Clan.
Add 1.75 Millions Cbills to anything you see for DHS and ENDO Tax, not to mention then you need to buy an engine (in the TBR's case a very expensive XL around 6 million Cbills) and then the cbills needed to have a proper loadout.
SO in that case, add about 8.5 Million Cbills to the IS mech price tag and you have a more accurate picture. You just pay for it all up front when you buy a clan mech.

Yeah, but IS mechs can share engines which saves a lot of money. While clanners have to buy fully equiped mechs just to sell them later.

Some very good builds are possible using A and S pods. The Timberwolf is sill one of the best mechs in the game.

I have been disciplined enough to simply amass cbills and awaited the Jan sale to purchase 15 mechs at a single sitting, saving tons of cbills in the process.
so patience is key.

I heard the Mad Wolf has been discounted as of late. It even comes with a free Imp.

So. They had a successful sell by pretty much all standards and vowed never to repeat that "mistake"? Explain.

All I can say is:

If you think 15.1m for a stock Timber Wolf Prime is bad, you should see the TT price of that beast! In TT the C-bill cost on a stock Timber Wolf prime is 24.2m c-bills....
Now to put that in perspective:
15.1m C-bills in MWO could buy you:
11 Locust 1V's or 4 CN9-A Centurions or 2 BL-6-KNT Black Knights
24.2m C-bills in TT could buy you:
16 Locust 1V's or 7 CN9-A Centurions or 3 BL-6-KNT Black Knights
Dire Wolves Primes are much more expensive in TT... (17.7m for MWO, 29.3m in TT....)
All that being said, just keep pluging away, you'll get the C-bills sooner or later, just have fun.

True.

However, you only need ONE XL engine of any particular size as IS assuming you don't mind swapping the parts around. I have been playing a long time and I still do that since as far as I am concerned both engines and modules are expensive (I am not one of those with a billion cbills banked

On the other hand, buy three TW and get three XL engines ... which aren't swappable.
The other "taxes" on IS (as mentioned) are endo/ferro and double heat sinks. Endo and DHS are useful on every IS mech while ferro is more situational and usually most useful on lights or mediums with limited hardpoints ... where the fraction of extra tonnage can be useful.
I believe that the cbill prices in MWO are mostly consistent with BT lore and the equipment on the mechs when you buy them. Clan mechs just come well equipped.(Ooops ...strike that ... a post above mine indicates that clan mechs are CHEAP compared to TT values

I buy my MC only when it goes on sale.
I usually buy my mech bays when they are half price.
I usually buy battlemechs when they are 30% off.
I bought my hero mech on sale:)
I dropped $120 million on the last module sale, and bought at least one of almost every module in the game - can't wait for the next one. At the time I was pretty sure I would never need to buy another module - I was totally wrong about that.
Still waiting for an engine sale - I've never seen one.
So now I have well over 100 mechs, and I saved about 30% off on almost all of that. I bought my three Direwolves for about $40 Mill, regular about $60 Mill... did the same for the King Crabs.
I went a little crazy during the last big mech sale, bought 42 battlemechs for about $200 Mill, saving a little over $100 mill... I am still leveling up these, which is taking some time.
Between sales, I usually return to rebuilding the resources in preparation for the next sale.
I consider this approach to have paid off handsomely - however, if there is a downside to method, it is that I find I am often driving yesterday's meta, and seldom driving the latest and greatest on the field. Only the Whales get to do that... you have to buy the mech packs to do that.
On the upside, I usually have enough C-Bills in the bank to hire an Elite Merc Corp to go after anyone I don't like.... and that's kinda nice.

@Crusty: You're only driving yesterday's meta if you end up selling things all the time. Those who sold certain chassis got bit right back when they returned to meta prominence.
